News Report ... Ben

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse.

It's barely 2 weeks since Uncle Yap mentioned that it means we are in deep shit when SIA starts cutting flights, and now it is a reality.

SINGAPORE - Singapore Airlines Ltd. said it plans to reduce flights and ground more than a dozen planes as people travel less amid the global economic slowdown.

The carrier said it will reduce capacity by 11 percent between April and March 2010 from the previous twelve months and decommission 17 aircraft after air cargo shipments fell 20 percent recently.

"The drop in air transportation has been sharp and swift," the company said in a statement Monday. "We have to face the reality that 2009 is going to be a very difficult year."

Singapore Airlines said last month that it planned to cut flights to the U.S., Europe and Asia as demand dried up. The airline said last week its October-December profit fell 43 percent as it flew 4.2 percent fewer passengers.

The airline said it met with worker unions Monday to discuss voluntary leave without pay, voluntary early retirement and shorter work months. Managers will cut their salaries first if necessary, the carrier said.

"We will contemplate retrenchment only as a last resort, but we do not have the luxury of time," the company said. "We need to agree and act on some measures quickly so that we can push back the point of retrenchment as far as possible."

Singapore is facing its worst recession since splitting from Malaysia in 1965 as exports plummet. Gross domestic product shrank a seasonally adjusted, annualized 16.9 percent in the fourth quarter, and the government expects GDP in 2009 to contract as much as 5 percent.

SIA stops Vancouver route
~the Straitstimes Feb 14, 2009

SINGAPORE Airlines (SIA) said on Saturday it will indefinitely suspend its thrice weekly service to Vancouver which has been 'badly affected' by the global economic crisis.

The last flight will be on April 25, the airline said in a statement. The Singapore-Vancouver service passes through Seoul.

SIA said it would continue to serve Canada through its existing schedule of 42 weekly flights between Singapore and its gateways in the United States.

The airline also offers codeshare services on Air Canada to Toronto and Montreal from its European gateways.

'The decision to suspend service is most regrettable, as Singapore Airlines has served Canada for over 20 years,' the carrier said. 'However, the economic conditions and performance on the route has been badly affected by the global economic downturn.' -- AFP

1. This may be a little late, but I hope all of you have done Cyrano's Peer Evaluation.

If for some cock reason, you have not done so, the link is here.

The site is optimised for IE, so dont bother using Firefox, cos you would not be able to see the

menu.

2. Soft Copy for Uncle Abbas's Landside proj

All groups faster send to aizat to compile

3. PSPS Assignment 3

if you have not already taken a look. it's actually quite a handful. PLS don't do it at the last
min.

There are 2 columns to fill up. The column on the left is based on the notes/lessons in the Handout booklet, which i believe is left empty at class-level, unless any of you have been taking notes for PSPS.

So, better don't get into a frenzy last min.

4. SQ006 FILA Presentation

Pilot wants a soft copy, so act accordingly.

As for groups who have not presented, I decided to post these links here for your benefit.

  1. SQ006 Investigation Commentary Report
  2. ASC Full Report
  3. Aerodrome Standards

Reason being, everyone is looking through the same sources of information. I think it's quite sian for students and lecturers alike to keep hearing all the incident data/info over and over again. Hopefully these articles can give you a better insight and perhaps you can tell us something that we don't already know.

Remember to keep your slides short and simple. You can refer back to my post last time on how to do ppt. I put the link to ppt templates on the righthand side as well.

Keep your info conciese and short.

eg. don't present standards for a RW < 1.8km when 05R is 2.2km

Just a reminder

Exams are just round the corner

So all your projs/assignments/whatever-not should be 7788 already.

and as for those who are still skipping classes,

jolly well know what's going on in classes.

Anyway, if you wanna take your mind off things,

You could try these ATC games.

PSP Airport Hero

1. pspdemocenter

2. playstation-joystiq

or this flash game that someone tagged in course blog

3. Radar game
